Jeep Key Fob Programming
Every Jeep we cover needs a locksmith or dealer to program a key. That's 29 model years across six models, and most of them are 2011 or newer. That lines up with the Chrysler-family rule that vehicles from 2010 on can't add a key at home. The Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Liberty and early Wrangler are all here. Nearly all take a CR2032, and three model years use a plain chip key.
Choose your Jeep model for programming steps, the battery it uses, and the correct replacement fob with FCC ID and part number — 29 model years across 6 models.

Can you program a Jeep key fob yourself?
Not at home. None of the 29 model years we cover has an owner programming procedure, so every Jeep fob and key has to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer with a diagnostic tool. The model pages still list the exact replacement fob and battery for each year.
What battery does a Jeep key fob take?
Every Jeep fob we cover that has a battery takes a CR2032. A plain chip key has no battery at all.
| Battery | Model years | Models |
|---|---|---|
| CR2032 battery on Amazon | 26 | Cherokee (2014–2015); Compass (2017–2021); Grand Cherokee (2011–2020); Liberty (2011–2012); Renegade (2015–2021) |
| None (chip key) | 3 | Wrangler (1998–2000) |
Jeep key types
The replacement keys we've matched to Jeep models fall into 3 types. A model year can take more than one, which is why the model pages list each option with its FCC ID.
- Transponder Key 1998–2020
- A cut metal key with a chip in the head. No buttons.
- Remote Head Key 2011–2018
- One piece: a cut metal blade with the lock/unlock buttons built into the head.
- Proximity Key 2011–2021
- Stays in your pocket — the car unlocks and starts without inserting a key.
What Jeep key programming costs
US price ranges for the key types above, with a working key on hand. Losing every key costs more, $200–$500 at a locksmith for a basic fob or transponder key.
| Key | Locksmith | Dealer |
|---|---|---|
| Transponder or remote-head key | $75–$200 | $150–$350 |
| Smart / push-to-start key | $150–$400 | $250–$600 |
