Ram Key Fob Programming
Every Ram year we cover, 2011 through 2015, needs a locksmith or dealer to program a key. That matches the Chrysler-family rule that from 2010 on, adding a key isn't a home job, and it applies from the 1500 through the 5500. Every Ram fob we cover takes a CR2032. For older trucks sold as the Dodge Ram, see the Dodge page, where many years can be done at home.
Choose your Ram model for programming steps, the battery it uses, and the correct replacement fob with FCC ID and part number — 25 model years across 5 models.
A brass dot marks models with verified replacement-fob data (FCC ID + part number).
Can you program a Ram key fob yourself?
Not at home. None of the 25 model years we cover has an owner programming procedure, so every Ram fob and key has to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer with a diagnostic tool. The model pages still list the exact replacement fob and battery for each year.
What battery does a Ram key fob take?
Every Ram fob we cover takes a CR2032.
| Battery | Model years | Models |
|---|---|---|
| CR2032 battery on Amazon | 25 | 1500 (2011–2015); 2500 (2011–2015); 3500 (2011–2015); 4500 (2011–2015); 5500 (2011–2015) |
Ram key types
The replacement keys we've matched to Ram models fall into 3 types. A model year can take more than one, which is why the model pages list each option with its FCC ID.
- Proximity Key 2011–2015
- Stays in your pocket — the car unlocks and starts without inserting a key.
- Remote Head Key 2011–2015
- One piece: a cut metal blade with the lock/unlock buttons built into the head.
- Transponder Key 2011–2015
- A cut metal key with a chip in the head. No buttons.
What Ram key programming costs
US price ranges for the key types above, with a working key on hand. Losing every key costs more, $200–$500 at a locksmith for a basic fob or transponder key.
| Key | Locksmith | Dealer |
|---|---|---|
| Transponder or remote-head key | $75–$200 | $150–$350 |
| Smart / push-to-start key | $150–$400 | $250–$600 |
