Volkswagen Key Fob Programming
Every Volkswagen we cover needs a locksmith or dealer to program a key or remote. That's 66 model years across 15 models, from the 2000 GTI and Cabrio to the 2014 Routan. Most VW years use a remote-head key, with the blade and buttons in one piece. Most take a CR2032, and nine model years use a chip key with no battery. The model pages list the FCC ID and part number to match.

Can you program a Volkswagen key fob yourself?
Not at home. None of the 66 model years we cover has an owner programming procedure, so every Volkswagen fob and key has to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer with a diagnostic tool. The model pages still list the exact replacement fob and battery for each year.
What battery does a Volkswagen key fob take?
Mostly the CR2032, which covers 55 of 66 model years. Volkswagen also uses the CR2025, so check your model and year before you buy. A plain chip key has no battery at all.
