2013 Mazda CX-7 Key Fob Programming
Updated 2026 Programming, battery & replacement fob
You can program a 2013 Mazda CX-7 key fob yourself in a few minutes using a working key or remote, no dealer visit needed. Follow the steps below, then check the battery and the correct replacement fob (with FCC ID and part number) if you need a new one.
You can add a new key to this Mazda yourself if you already have two keys that start the engine. The new key must be cut first, and it has to be a genuine key — a cloned hardware-store key won't work.
Before you start
- Two original keys that already start the engine
- Your new key, already cut
- 1Insert one working key and turn it to ON (just shy of starting). Hold it there about 3 seconds, until the security light goes out.
- 2Turn back to OFF and remove the key.
- 3Within 10 seconds, insert the second working key and turn to ON. Again wait about 3 seconds until the security light goes out, then turn OFF and remove it.
- 4Within 20 seconds, insert the new key and turn to ON. Hold for at least 3 seconds, then turn back to OFF.
- 5The security light comes on for three seconds — that confirms the new key is programmed.
Tips & troubleshooting
- No two working keys? These keys can't be cloned at a hardware store (Ace, Lowe's, Walmart, Home Depot). You'll need an automotive locksmith or dealer.
Replacement key fob
Match the FCC ID printed on the back of your existing fob to be sure of the right part.

2013 Mazda CX-7 key fob battery
A plain transponder (chip) key has no battery. The immobilizer chip inside is powered by the car's ignition ring whenever you turn the key, so there's nothing to replace. If your key also has lock/unlock buttons, that remote portion uses a 3V coin cell — see the remote battery steps for that.
Battery tips
- If your engine won't start but the key turns, the issue is usually a worn key or the immobilizer reading the chip — not a battery.
- A spare chip key must be cut and programmed to your car before it will start the engine.
