2010 Toyota RAV-4 Key Fob Programming
Updated 2026 Programming, battery & replacement fob
You can program a 2010 Toyota RAV-4 key fob yourself in a few minutes using a working key or remote, no dealer visit needed. Follow the steps below, then check the battery and the correct replacement fob (with FCC ID and part number) if you need a new one.
Remote / key fob programming
You can program Toyota remotes yourself with a sequence of door and ignition movements. Have every remote with you. Try the main procedure first; if the locks don't cycle, use the alternate.
Before you start
- Every remote for the vehicle
Main procedure
- 1With the key out of the ignition, unlock and open the driver's door (all other doors closed).
- 2Within 5 seconds, insert the key into the ignition (don't turn) and pull it out — do this twice.
- 3Within 40 seconds: close then open the driver's door twice, then insert the key (don't turn) and pull it out.
- 4Within 40 seconds: close then open the driver's door twice. Insert the key and leave it in, close the driver's door, turn the ignition ON then back to OFF (don't start), and remove the key.
- 5Within 3 seconds the locks should lock then unlock, confirming programming mode. If they don't, start over or use the alternate procedure.
- 6Within 40 seconds: press LOCK and UNLOCK on the remote together for 1.5 seconds, release, then press and hold LOCK alone. Within 10 seconds the locks cycle once to confirm. (Two cycles means it failed — repeat.) Repeat for each remote.
- 7Open the driver's door.
Alternate procedure
Toyota Avalon uses the Avalon button step; all other models use the standard button step.
- 1Make sure all doors are closed, then open the driver's door.
- 2Insert the key into the ignition, then remove it.
- 3Press LOCK and UNLOCK on the door-lock switch 5 times at one-second intervals.
- 4Close and reopen the driver's door, then press LOCK and UNLOCK on the switch 5 more times at one-second intervals.
- 5Insert the key, turn the ignition ON then back to OFF (don't start), and remove the key. The locks cycle to confirm programming mode.
- 6Avalon: press LOCK on the remote for at least 1 second. All others: press and hold LOCK + UNLOCK together 1.5 seconds, then press and hold LOCK until the locks cycle.
- 7The locks cycle once to confirm (twice means it failed). Repeat for remaining remotes, then close the door and test.
Key programming
Professional programming required
This key fob can't be programmed with a do-it-yourself procedure. The vehicle needs a diagnostic tool connected to its OBD port to pair a new fob, so a replacement has to be set up by an automotive locksmith or a dealer.
Order the correct replacement fob below — match the FCC ID on your current fob first — then have a local automotive locksmith or the dealer program it to your vehicle.

Match the FCC ID printed on the back of your existing fob to be sure of the right part.

Your 2010 Toyota RAV-4 key fob uses a CR2016 3V lithium coin cell. A fresh one typically lasts 3–5 years.
Find CR2016 batteries on AmazonHow to replace the battery
- 1 Slide the release latch and pull the metal emergency key out of the fob.
- 2 Use that key (or a coin) to pry the two halves apart at the seam.
- 3 Lift out the old coin cell — note which side faces up.
- 4 Drop in the new battery the same way (printed + side usually faces the back cover).
- 5 Press the case back together until it clicks, then test lock/unlock and push-to-start.
Battery tips
- Use a fresh, name-brand 3V lithium cell — bargain cells drain quickly.
- Even with a dead fob battery you can usually still start the car by holding the fob against the start button — check your owner's manual.
- If the fob still won't work after a new battery, it may need re-syncing or programming.
